Here are some of the "unanswered" questions of Slate in 2006.   The source address is http://www.slate.com/id/2155836 - Here.

The Explainer's Unanswered Questions From 2006

• What comes after 999 trillion?

• Why do train whistles at night always sound lonely and mournful? Not so in the daytime.

• Given the exchange and dispersion of matter, how likely is it/how often do we inhale/consume and/or incorporate into our own protein structure molecules that were once in some historical figure, say Abraham Lincoln?

• Lasers are now powerful and small (at least I think they are), so why don't our troops carry laser guns?

• Why is smooth peanut butter cheaper than nutty?

• If we taught animals to talk, how would that affect the world?

• What would happen to the stock market if a meteor impacted the earth? What would happen to the global markets and the U.S. market? Say a meteor hits inside U.S. borders and takes out two states.

• Is it possible to collect all the cookie dough in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream and actually bake cookies from it?

• How clean is bar soap in a public bathroom? Is it "self-cleaning," since it's soap? It seems like a health hazard to me.

• Why did Zidane head-butt his opponent in the World Cup final? Do the French not fight with their fists?

• When we are approaching another person, like in a hallway, why do we step to our left? That is, try and pass right-shoulder-to-right-shoulder.

I have been pondering this situation for as long as I can remember (maybe age 7-8) and it drives me nuts. It makes me feel like my head will implode if I think any harder. Is the universe infinite? It must end somewhere. But when it ends … there must be something on the other side … right?

• If a group of passengers on a hijacked plane wanted to, could they bring a plane down by all of them using their cell phones at the same time?

• Why do humans die so young? In biblical times, people lived for several hundred years; now living to 100 is considered a long life. What happened?

• How can I tell if I was the first person to use the term "K-fed-up" in relation to Britney's divorce?

• Why is the No. 8 always the same combination (tamale, enchilada, rice, beans) in any Mexican restaurant I visit? This includes primarily the southeast United States but not obvious franchises.

• Hi, how does nature make water? How does nature combine one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms to make water? If we knew how nature makes water, then perhaps we can then find an efficient way of separating hydrogen from oxygen, thus creating the ultimate source for energy.

• Why is grilled chicken tasting increasingly rubbery and odd?

• i need more money.....what business can i start that will not take a lot of time...i have internet access daily...........and i have saturday morning free before 12 noon to run around. i work from 7am to 9:30 pm..............

• Just suppose, one day someone wants to sell you an old gold bar. You don't know if it belongs to any treasure, and you can't find out if there is any reward for it, if it was a lost treasure. How would you go about melting it and selling it? The same would go for a gemstone about the size of a dinner plate. How would you go about selling it? If you're living in a country that is corrupt and you cannot trust the government, or anyone else, what can you do?

• Can you tell me how long it will take if you eat rat poison to see if it is going to affect you? Please e-mail me back. Because my niece ate some.

• Hi. I just wanted to know if our eyeballs roll back when we are sleeping (or closed) or do they shake? Or …

• PYGMIES: How/when/where/still in existence/do we mate with them?

• Do dolphins actually save people? If so, why do they do this?

• I have a sister that stresses the hell out of me. For example this one sister out of three knows that I am recovering from a serious car accident. I thank God for saving my life, and healing me each and every day. My question is can a person who complains and talks about the same complaining crap every day stress you completely out? About four days ago I had to tell this one sister (Annie) basically to get a life and stop bugging me with her problems and everybody else's. I reminded her that I am still in a neck brace and healing … I really need to know if a person can really stress you out with the same old thing over and over and over again. PLEASE ANSWER BACK ASAP.

• Can someone be forced to masturbate?

• Why do we make a "lip-smacking" sound when kissing closed-mouth? We do make the sound; it doesn't happen on its own ...

• What's likely to happen to people, or what might they feel, when they're killed instantly?

• Are UFOs confirmed to be from other Alien Planets?

• How do you get to write articles for Slate. Do you have to go through a process?

• I met a 40-year-old stripper back in February of this year. We had a special connection. Yet, she was homeless, going through a divorce and bankruptcy. She has three kids who live in Alabama and she pays $500 a month in child support. Moreover, she used cocaine. At one point, she was arrested for forgery. She spent a month in jail but was released under the condition that she become a narc for the police department. She gave the names of her dealers and would wear wires when drug deals were going down. I let her stay at my place and kept food in the refrigerator. This past Monday she took all her clothes, my money, and left. The night before, she hung out with some friends. I called her, and she said I was too good for her. She said she had never been treated so well. She said she would drag me down and she couldn't bear to handle that. I told her my hopes and dreams the night before. I wonder if I scared her off. I don't know what to make of it. I don't know if she met someone else the night before and doesn't want to tell me. It's killing me inside. I cried for her. I really cared for her. Can you give me some advice?

The Explainer's Unanswered Questions From 2006

• What comes after 999 trillion?

Easy, 1 quadrillion. But I like to think of it as one-big-mutha-trucka-sumo-wrestla.. illion.

• Why do train whistles at night always sound lonely and mournful? Not so in the daytime.

Cause Jban doesn't ride the train at night. Duh!

• Given the exchange and dispersion of matter, how likely is it/how often do we inhale/consume and/or incorporate into our own protein structure molecules that were once in some historical figure, say Abraham Lincoln?
Not really sure, but I'd love to get a chance to consume you.

• Lasers are now powerful and small (at least I think they are), so why don't our troops carry laser guns?

YOU DON'T CARRY YOUR LASER GUN? What are you, crazy??

• Why is smooth peanut butter cheaper than nutty?

Cause the smooth peanuts get the ladies to buy the drinks.

• If we taught animals to talk, how would that affect the world?

Not a whole lot. Andr0ss talks to us, haven't seen any effects yet.

• What would happen to the stock market if a meteor impacted the earth? What would happen to the global markets and the U.S. market? Say a meteor hits inside U.S. borders and takes out two states.

We'll still be safe in igloo-loving blubber-eating Canada.

• Is it possible to collect all the cookie dough in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream and actually bake cookies from it?

Of course it is. What do you think Im doing right now? Almost done here.. one sec.

• How clean is bar soap in a public bathroom? Is it "self-cleaning," since it's soap? It seems like a health hazard to me.

Always carry your own soap. You never know when you could end up in a tiny village in Bangladesh.

• Why did Zidane head-butt his opponent in the World Cup final? Do the French not fight with their fists?

They say to use your head and think before going into a fight. But damn.. bring your head into the fight.. now you're talking!

• When we are approaching another person, like in a hallway, why do we step to our left? That is, try and pass right-shoulder-to-right-shoulder.

Cause people carry wallets in their right back pocket. Easy to swipe, no questions asked.

I have been pondering this situation for as long as I can remember (maybe age 7-8) and it drives me nuts. It makes me feel like my head will implode if I think any harder. Is the universe infinite? It must end somewhere. But when it ends … there must be something on the other side … right?

Something? Sure. There's me. Hi hi!

• If a group of passengers on a hijacked plane wanted to, could they bring a plane down by all of them using their cell phones at the same time?

Not if they're playing MP cell phone games. Those things will distract you!

• Why do humans die so young? In biblical times, people lived for several hundred years; now living to 100 is considered a long life. What happened?

McDonalds.

• How can I tell if I was the first person to use the term "K-fed-up" in relation to Britney's divorce?
Easy. Check your personal diary. Do you still have a life or not?

• Why is the No. 8 always the same combination (tamale, enchilada, rice, beans) in any Mexican restaurant I visit? This includes primarily the southeast United States but not obvious franchises.

There are 7 decent combos, one for each day of the week. The 8th one just so happens to be the leftovers and crap they almost tossed in the garbage.

• Hi, how does nature make water? How does nature combine one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms to make water? If we knew how nature makes water, then perhaps we can then find an efficient way of separating hydrogen from oxygen, thus creating the ultimate source for energy.
Nature didn't make water. Water made nature. COMMON SENSE DUDE!

• Why is grilled chicken tasting increasingly rubbery and odd?

It's a conspiracy!

Just carry it with you and use it to club people who try to talk to you. You'll get the respect you need to sell it.

• Can you tell me how long it will take if you eat rat poison to see if it is going to affect you? Please e-mail me back. Because my niece ate some.

• Do dolphins actually save people? If so, why do they do this?

They're smart. They expect the favour to be returned.. somehow.. I wont get into details.

• I have a sister that stresses the hell out of me. For example this one sister out of three knows that I am recovering from a serious car accident. I thank God for saving my life, and healing me each and every day. My question is can a person who complains and talks about the same complaining crap every day stress you completely out? • I have noticed that a lot of mainstream movies feature men peeing. Are the actors really peeing?

Why, are you actually paying attention in those scenes?

many theories with strong evidence state that the universe is not infinite, but expanding. its difficult to say whats outside of the universe, for the same reason to imagine what its like not to be constrained by time. the universe will eventually stop expanding upon the cease of exchange of heat (energy, to be exact). at that point, everything will completely freeze (as in lack of motion, not necessarily temperature), including you and me. the ceasing is due to the balancing of energy, just like the hot tea that cools off in a room.

the universe is a ticking time bomb -- waiting to stop.

yeah, in about a google years... but thats just one theory, the 'big Bang' theory... witch in many cases has been prouven more and more unlikely.

more likely was the 'big bang' was one of many bangs created when a 'super' black hole reaches a certain high enough density/mass. and the mass of these have to be the size of our known Universe all compressed into a tiny ball the size of a penny to go off... so, there has been many big bangs, and there will be many more, they are just so far away from our known universe we never see any sings of them. if nothing else this theory would explain why galaxies are Accelerating away from each other, heading to a 'super' black hole.  of course, this is all theoretical. but so is the big bang :)

aye. if it were true, it would be so long from now seeing as how everything is said to still be cooling off from our big bang. personally, i dont really believe in any of the theories by themselves, but i find them extremely interesting.

i think its quite simple in theory, but difficult by our limitations. im not going to begin to steal this man's ideas, though. by this theory, teleportation and time travel seem quite easy (if we know someone in the higher dimensions...)

I couldnt view it for some reason. But when i think about the effects of it. Obviously the best ideas and opinions I can get are from movies, ( back to the future trilogy, Donny darko). Like what would happen if Marty went back to the wild west and left a frisbe or something there. Or there was someone there to witness a flying train when doc goes to visit marty in the end of the 3rd one. Or could the simpilist thing disturb the time space continuem? Like if I went back in time and said yo what up nigga to like 3 people on complete accident. When i got back to the future would that be the general greeting instead of hi? Lol These are some of the stupid things I think about when I ponder time travel and its effects. If it were possible I dont think I would do it for the simple reason I would be scarred to f**k something up in the past.

yea, as the video stated, in one of the dimensions is every possible outcome from every possible action, infinity. so, if you were to change the slightest thing, even just your presence somewhere, it can completely change the outcome and true "present."

now we're getting into butterfly effect and chaos theory =D

time travel was proven impossible by einstein. with his e=mc2 equation. e=mc2 is just the nice version of it, i don't know the exact equation but somewhere in there is a C and that C = the speed of light, and that C is a subtracted by a S and that S= our speed, now that c - s is all on the bottom of a fraction, which is division. To time travel we would have to go faster than the speed of light, but we need to go faster than the speed of light without actually reaching the speed of light, because if you were to reach the speed of light then C - S = 0 and when nature divides by 0 guess what happens, a black hole, and this black hole would engulf the entire universe (which is infinitely big btw) ( oh and as a sub note there is more than 1 infinite, there is actually infinite infinites confusing huh?) so basically time travel is out of the question unless you can find a way to pass light speed without EVER hitting it, cause if you hit it C - S = 0 and when nature divides by 0 black holes happen.

Gotta get to class, but btw seeing the future was never disproven

Posted By: fenix
Date Posted: 02/January/2007 at 5:01pm
why does dividing by a 0 create a black hole? a black hole is just matter so dense that its gravitational pull is strong enough to suck in even light.

i still dont think its impossible. even einstein was hindered by only three dimensions. his equation only reflects on three dimenions as well.

i guess an example of this would be something like the following. in einstein's bootleg function, e=(mc^2)/(C-s), where C is speed of light. now, a more exact equation might be e=(mc^2)/|D(C-s)| where D is an unknown dimension variable, and |D(C-s)| is the absolute value of the speeds with respect to the dimension. in other words, his equation might not be perfect, or complete, since he's only applying three-dimension laws to a four-dimension concept

that helps to explain what I am trying to say

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole

explains how black holes are made

Posted By: fenix
Date Posted: 03/January/2007 at 1:14pm
first off, your formulas are working against you; if speed of light is constant, which it is, then time and space are variables
c = v = dx/dt
that's what acts to describe length contraction and time dilation
and einstein was the one that challenged newtonian mechanics (sub light-speed travel) by asking what happens to light across relative frames of reference, where one frame is moving near the speed of light;this blew the newtonian theory out of the water, thus was born RELATIVITY, what einstein was famous for.

thus it's contradictory to say that einstein said time travel was impossible, when the foundation for relativity is that time is, in fact, a variable.

in your own wiki articles,
"His special theory of relativity ultimately showed that the traditional (Euclidean-Galilean) assumption of absolute time and distance was incorrect, and, as a consequence, that mass and energy are different only in form."
that right there states that time travel is
quite possible, and that as long as the speed of light is constant, then space and time are in fact variable

and again, supernovae that successfully create an event horizon become black holes. now, unless a star is the victim of its own shoddy division, im gonna stick with black holes being created when a massive star stops generating fusion energy and collapses on its own gravity.

i think the hole idea of the speed of light being the fastest possible thing is silly.

the speed at witch Gravity Propagates itself is about 100 billion times faster then the speed of light. or else our solar system would have fallen apart long ago.

we have super Coliders able to ALMOST reach the speed of light ( within one millionth of a percent, witch after a little math is something like 10kph away from it )
how can we even REACH this speed? are we not moving at an Incredible pace, not only it our solar system but in our galaxy, and is our galaxy not moving as well? to reach these speeds not only would our galaxy need to be stopped, but so would our orbit around the sun, and the suns orbit around the galaxy. the speed of light needs to be Relative for use to reach this speed.

Humans are always in a Stage of Denial..

The Earth is flat, the sky is just a half circle on top of it..
the earth is the center of the universe
man will never break the sound barrier
man will never reach space

we are still in denial, we just don't know of what yet,
the funny thing is, at one point, when people still though the earth was flat,
you could be sentenced to death just for thinking it was round.
just because you are right, doesn't mean you will be accepted.

Posted By: fenix
Date Posted: 04/January/2007 at 3:28am
and just because its right, it doesnt mean its right; we always need to question ourselves on everything "accepted." just like how it was accepted that the earth was flat, no one saw a point to question it. well, their right way of thinking was wrong.

its hard to prove anything is right, really.

All I was trying to say is what my teacher told me, that if you reach the speed of light (since the speed of light is a constant in the equation, in a part of the equation in the denominator of the fraction) then you would be subtracting the speed of light from the speed of light which is 0, the 0 in that is created in the denominator turns everything in the denominator to 0 since whenever you multiply anything by 0 you get 0, that in turn makes the entire equation have a denominator 0. When you have a fraction in mathematics with 0 then the fraction is "undefined" but when nature has a fraction with the denominator of 0 bad things happen, bad things like black holes. Why a black hole is created i can't think of right now i'll get back to you after my math class so i can ask my teacher.

Oh and by the way we actually created this damn confusing thing we call math lol.

and also what we should really be asking ourselves is not what the answer is, but if we should really know what the answer is.

lol, im not wanting to pwn anyone here, just further discuss the possibility of various seemingly-impossible topics

and math isnt THAT confusing, i love it... =(
the intuitive sciences (including some math, like calculus), are much more exciting than the others, imo. when you can relate what you're learning to everything around you, its an alien feeling since we're so used to learning about stuff we're never gonna use.

The reason that when nature divides by 0 that black holes are created is as follows

Eventually when you get to the speed of light (the c in the aforementioned equation) you end up subtracting C – C (I mixed them up before it was S – C that is the part of the denominator), this creates the entire denominator as a 0. Mass and Time are variables and the closer you get to C with your speed the more mass you get and the less time you have. When S = your speed, and you speed becomes the speed of light, making C – C in the denominator then the denominator becomes 0. When this happens you mass becomes infinite and you time becomes 0, which makes a black hole. This is amazing because mass and time are supposed to be constants.

That is what my teacher told me yesterday when I asked. Hope that clears it up for you Fenix as to why when nature divides by 0 it makes black holes :D

what class does this professor teach? i still have my reservations about his black hole division claim. and what school is this at? cause if he is, indeed, full of poppycock, then i'd like to punch him in the face.

lol, but anyways, umm i'm still in highschool atm Fenix, and the teacher is Mr. Tiffin, and this guy is absolutely brilliant. He teaches at Wayne Central High School in Wayne County (a suburb of Rochester, NY) which is in upstate NY by Lake Ontario, kinda. But yeah :P
