Need some help.

So one of my computers finally bit the dust.  It got to the point where it would boot to a BSOD (blue screen of death).  This was my computer with mp3's, documents, MS Office, etc.... just a utility machine.

So i rip the hard drive out, set it to slave, and put it in my gaming box.  Easy as pie right? (pie>cake)  Well, I can't access "My Documents" from my old computer...it says access denied :(

I even created a log-on User with Admin properties (same name as my old computer) on my game computer but still can't access the folder.  Anyone know how I can get these files?  Many of my wife's pictures and important files are in that folder.

Thanks.

What OS was your original machine?

What OS is your new machine?

Is the admin user/pass the same as the old machine?

Old Machine: XP

New Machine: XP

On my new machine I didn't have user profiles setup since it was only me.  Since I couldn't access the files, I created a user on my new machine with the same name and PW as it was on my old machine....still couldn't access the folder.

You need to take ownership of the tree structure. The permissions are wrong between the new/old setup.

From explorer click on tools>>folder options>>view and uncheck "use simple file sharing" (it should be at the bottom).

Now go to the top level of the old documents & settings folder, right click the folder and select "sharing and security". Then click the advanced button. There should be an "Owner" tab, click owner tab and add your current account/admin account. Select the "replace on subcontainers" checkbox and click OK on all the windows.

You may need to boot into safe mode to do this. Give it a try.

That should do it.

PREACH!!

I will build a shrine to you in my closet!  You rule man, it worked like a charm.  A thousand "Thank You's."  You saved me a ton of time and heartache from the wifey :p

Thanks again. (doubt I would have ever figured that one out)
