So just got out of a lengthy briefing about EA's acquisition of Digital Illusions (DICE), the original developers of the Battlefield series (where EA served as the end-publisher); of course, we knew ahead of time but public disclosure was a no-no.

This happening just weeks before the launch of 2142, what are your thoughts? And more importantly, who here intends to get BF2142? The online beta was terribly buggy but they've fixed (most) things, I've played a semi-stable release and it's actually quite fun. And it runs much better than BF2, for those who felt they might have to upgrade yet again.

Thoughts? Crucify or worship EA?

I will most likely be getting it.  I didnt get a chance to play the online beta because I was waiting for my new PC and by the time it came it was already closed, but it looks very fun.

I'll try the demo.

It will take a lot (Spore) for me to give any of my money to EA.

Spore's up there, yeah. I'm also awaiting Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent and Rainbow Six: Vegas. I really dig Single Player stealth/special ops games.

Hehe yea, of course.  It's also made by Ubisoft. I like Rb6/SC because it's high tech, but I dig the middle ages setting as well. Just mentioned the other two because it's only a few more weeks! Can't wait!

Ubisoft definitely has its act together.

Rainbow Six Vegas is just a watered down RB6.  The old school rainbow was amazing, and Rouge Spear was top notch, but after two, it was ok... Raven Shield was indeed very fun and very real, however, with the inclusion of consoles, the gameplay and graphics have been on the burner as far as PCs are concered, and have killed the fun for me.  It no longer feels like a PC game, but just a port, with some spoofed up graphics, and mouse support.  I miss the real Rainbow Six.

Splinter Cell... excells, because of it's 3rd person gameplay, however, I no longer have the financial means to continually upgrade every year like I used to, and graphical immersion is the main attraction of the Splinter Cell series.  Why play it if I can't play the game with shadows on? (sarcasm, point proven).

I will be getting Battlefield 2142, just because it bares similarity with PS in some of it's game types/classes, and I haven't ever been let down by the Battlefield series, either.  Find the right people to play any BF game with, and it's as good as any day in PS, or any game, for that matter: teamwork + good people trumps genre, making any game fantastic to play.

On another note, I picked up two copies of Company of Heroes this past weekend, and I am loving that!  Full scale, fully realised WW2 with physics, impressive atmosphere, incredible sound, realistic squad bahavior, actual cover/terrain, etc make this game a real winner.  I love Relic; they produce top notch games, with a real sense of intensity/life.  I play against my dad over the internet and when I visit his house in VA Beach, VA.

Lets see... yeah, I'll continue to play PS, since that is still fun for me, and there are always limitless possibilities in hte gameplay, regardless of new content or updates.  The mentality still prevails: 13 bucks a month and I can play however many hours I want, is still more than what I get going to the movies once or paying 50 bucks for a generic single/multiplayer game that's been rehashed a million times.  PS is still fun and engaging, and good people still play.

Agreed, and as for BF2142 I might try it if I hear enough people praise it.  Call me a weak but I actually sub'd WoW for the first time ever about a week ago so that I could play games with alot of the old KOTOR members.  It's been fun, but I miss the PS days of old.

I will "most likely" get 2142.  I played in the open beta and it was fun enough to spend the $50.

I am however disappointed at EA in general because of their business model.

Make BF2
Make Special Forces (more $$, can't run on same server as BF2 so it split the popluation)
Make Euro Forces (more $$, only run EF maps, split Pop even more)
Make Armored core (more $$, only run AC maps, split population)
Oh yea..here's a BF2 patch

You see a pattern?  If EA tries this scheme with the 2142 series, then they can shove it.

i'll get it cause snow, logan and i had some magical moments in bf2. plus i like the freedom of the series, and the 'close enough' physics. some really fun times. if the mechanics are similar, it doesn't matter to me whether the opfor is wearing german grey, a turban, or a space suit. give me some boxes to dive over and some bushes to shoot through and i'm happy.

plus they [dice] made some old ass street racing game i got with my diamond viper video card in like 1999 that was fun as hell, i've liked em since. rallisport challenge also endeared them to me. anyone who makes a decent rally game, and isn't codemasters, i like.

I've read a lot of horror stories on the net on how EA treats their employees. I'm not normally one to instantly believe stories on the Internet, but the ones I have read seem very credible and completely plausible. EA won't be getting any of my money.

unfortunately i'm sure what it means if after bf2142 i'd be surprised if we see another games from dice for the pc. :(

ea = lowest common denominator = console.

Hehe, I'm an RB6 fan at heart as well, had the original and played it for hours... still remember all the maps too (Embassy.. Hutu Rebel Camp, Electric Dam, Hacienda...), I remember having dreams about Rogue Spear too. Those were the days.

Just had a debrief on this year's Tokyo Game Show as well. Lost Planet and Project Slypheed look amazing (both for the 360).

I dunno, EA own the C&C Franchise...I love RTS's.

Maybe the new Dawn of War game will remove my addiction to C&C. By the way, if you havent already bought Dawn of War + Winter Assault yet, you suck!

I heard the playstyle is exactly like BF2, which means I won't be buying it.  The BF series just seems stale to me gameplay wise.  Plus I only play video games to be with friends anymore, so I"ll stick with PS and WoW.
