So I decided to resurrect one of my old machines to give to my little sister (she likes to play SIMS :p ). I got a new HD ..put it in ..pressed the power button ..and have a unique problem.

When I press the power button there is no power.  Actually, I can see the fans (PowerSupp, CPU, case, etc..) turn for a very brief moment but then nothing.  Anybody can help figure out what the issue is?

- Power Supply?
- Switch on the Case?
- Other?

Tell me your thoughts, before I start replacing everything and save myself no money

hmm thats tough, it could be a few things (PS, switch on the case, mobo). if i had to guess i would eliminate switch on the case and narrow it down to power supply or mobo. either the power supply stops supplying the mobo with power or the mobo stops carrying the power for whatever reason. i would try replacing the power supply first and if you get the same problem than its probably the mobo.

No lovely bios beeps in the beginning of the boot up?

Have you check to ensure the processor is not loose on the socket?      That's all I can think of .. Need to drink to clear my thought process.

also make sure the heat sink hasn't become loose, and to test the power button just unplug it from the mobo and touch the 2 pins with a paper clip.

Yea,

I get no beep or anything. I can see the fans turn for a second but then everything stops.  I'll check for loose CPU, heat sink, etc...  Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, you can test the switch by shorting the power pins (a jumper works well) on the mobo.

IF YOU HAVE AN ATX (if it's a Dell, HP, or any other non homebuilt machine don't try this), the PSU can kind of be tested by shorting Pin 14 (green lead) and a Pin 15 (black lead) on the PSU connector with a paperclip.  Unplug the PSU from the wall and the mobo, put in the paperclip, plug into wall, see if the PSU fan spins.

Thanks Solitary,

The PC is homebuilt but it may be an ATX powersupply.  I'll check when I get home from work and try your tips.  Thanks again
